St. John the Evangelist
on
Love
(Excerpts from the First Epistle of John)

1 John 2: 9Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness. 10Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall.  11Whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1 John 3: 17If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him?  18Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.

1 John 4:
7Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.  8Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.  9In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.  10In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.  11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.  12No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us.  ...
20If anyone says, "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.  21This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
