| Not - "How did he/she die?" But "How did he/she live?"
Not - "What did he/she gain?" But "What did he/she give?"
Not - "What was his/her station?" But "Had he/she had heart?"
And "How did he/she play his/her God-given part?"
Not - "What was his/her shrine?" Nor "What was his/her creed?"
But "Had he/she befriended those really in need?"
Not - "What did the piece in the newspaper say?"
But "How many were sorry when he/she passed away?"
Was he/she always ready with a word of encouragement
Or a smile to banish a tear?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man or a woman , regardless of birth
What greater gift is there, then to be remembered as
Someone who gave of him or herself first to others in need.
When my life has reached its end,
And I take my final breath,
I want to know I've left behind
Some "good" before my death.
I hope that in my final hour
I can honestly say,
That somewhere in my lifetime,
I have brightened someone's day. |
Maybe I have brought a smile
To someone else's face
And made one moment a little brighter
While I lived here in this place.
Lord, hear my prayer, listen to what I say
Guide me in your path today,
And whisper softly in my ear.
In the years I have left here.
Give to me the strength that I will need
Show me what it is I must know
That I might show sincere compassion
And love to others before I go.
If just one heart was touched by mine
And surely a smile was left behind,
Then the life that I had led
Was not one that was filled with dread.
With all my heart I truly pray
To have your word guide me this day
That I may reach out and bring a smile
Making my life a bit worthwhile.
