    LifeTeen Opening Night

We closed off the busy weekend with the Opening of Life Teen Parking Lot Paloosa!  What a great turn out we had even though the rain brought the games inside!  Thanks to all who made the day a success!  We had an incredible turn out and lots of parents came to find out how to get involved in Parent Life this year!  What a great start to the 2011-12 Life Teen year!

    Fire & Ice LifeTeen Retreat

We learned about how to keep the flames of the Holy Spirit alive in our hearts, how to keep out those “fire extinguishers” that make our hearts cold like ice, and how to melt the ice around our hearts when we learn to forgive and let go of those things which hurt us.

Our Life Teen Fire and Ice Retreat went AWESOME!  Thanks for all the prayers!  A special thank you to those who prepared our food, the Healing ministry and those who organized and prayed for during the 24 hour Eucharistic Adoration!  The Core Team did an awesome job and of course the Teens!  You guys were awesome and what a great weekend!

Thank you God for your love and mercy and the power of your healing love during Eucharistic Adoration.  Again, when asked the highlight of the retreat, many of our teens said the love and peace they experienced during Adoration.  Jesus is Awesome!

    On Loan

The teens started out the night by creating works of "art" out of garbage. We talked about being stewards of the earth - taking care of the environment. The lesson was that everything we have is on loan to us - we won't be able to take it with us when we die. We talked about how we need to "clean up" ourselves - to go to reconciliation if we have sins to confess, to think about what we say to our friends and family. Is the last thing we said to our parents how we want them to remember us?

    New Year Celebration

Happy New Year! November 29 is the date on the liturgical calendar this year that officially marks the New Year. To celebrate, we had a New Years Party complete with the dropping of the ball. We had fun showing off our best moves while our DJ provided us with some awesome music, too! Then we investigated how Mary must have felt to learn that she was to conceive a child even though she wasn’t with a man. We also experienced how surprised Mary was to learn that her sister, Elizabeth, was 6 months pregnant, even though she was beyond child-bearing age. We then learned about the advent wreath and what advent means and how we can prepare for the birth of Jesus. Thanks to everyone who set up all the amazing decorations and made this night all the more fun.

    Spirit Day

Isn’t it amazing how the Holy Spirit works through us in our daily lives? Those who were present at LifeTeen last week got to experience first-hand the saving power of the Holy Spirit. By watching three dramatic skits and pondering how much the Holy Spirit helps affect our choices; we prepared ourselves for a Bible study and adoration with Father Al. In the Bible study, we each lit a candle and witnessed how we are the light of the world and how our light can brighten a whole room. We also promised to be followers of Christ and to help others shine. During adoration, we experienced the wonder of God in all his glory. It was a very powerful and heart-changing experience.

“Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” ---John 8: 12

    Proof that God Exists

Can you prove that God exists? Our three wacky scientists performed three experiments, trying to prove God’s existence. However, of all the experiments, none truly proved that God exists, though. So how do we, as Catholics, know that God was alive and still is alive? This was the topic for last week’s LifeTeen. We explored what it means to be followers of Christ and how we can live for Him when so many of us don’t talk about our faith outside of church. We also defined the word faith and what it means to have faith. Only through faith can we be saved. For it says in Acts 4:12,

“There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.”

So you think you can dance? The core team showed us that they knew how to move when they performed the Evolution of Dance. This hilarious dance got teens eager to make up their own routines. Teens were assigned to one of three choreographers to put together a dance in just twenty minutes. Pretty soon, the whole room was filled with teens auditioning their best moves. When the time ran out, the teams preformed their dances to music, determined to keep their footwork in line with the beat. With dances that ranged from hip-hop to salsa, the audience was sure to enjoy the show. After showing off their moves, the teams were critiqued by three judges. In the end, one team was chosen as the best and everyone agreed that they were the stars of the night. Psalm 149:3 (NIV) states, “Let them praise his name with dancing…” We all had a great time and we especially enjoyed the delicious dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs.

    Attitude Check!

Teens got a big “be-attitude” check at LifeTeen last week. To better understand how the beatitudes apply to our daily lives, the teens split up into groups and acted out skits based on each beatitude.

They were fun but serious, displaying first-hand the obstacles that teens have to conquer. Father Al even joined in on all the fun! Everyone’s favorite beatitude was #6: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God. Thanks to the food crew who satisfied our rumbling stomachs with an awesome pasta and salad dinner!

    LifeTeen Launch - Office Olympics!

Wow! Our first LifeTeen night kicked off with a wonderful talk by Father Al and our first ever LifeTeen Mass. Then we enjoyed a delicious meal while listening to some awesome music.

The whistle blew and 35 teens rushed to complete 7 games in 45 minutes. In the coffee cup relay race we had to complete an obstacle course while holding a cup full of coffee. The catch? If you spilled any coffee, you were sent back to the beginning. In trashcan basketball we each got three pieces of wadded-up paper that we had to shoot into trashcans. Fun was had by all and we thank all the volunteers who made this night possible.

    Goodbye party, beach & skit

We partied hard at the Father Pervaiz goodbye party and stuffed ourselves with lots of yummy food (thanks to everyone who helped us accomplish that task!) Then we headed over to the beach where we were greeted with lots of sand and choppy waves. After getting rid of all the sand we went to the chapel where we listened to Father Al decode the Gospel story. When we went to Mass, we watched a group of teens perform a skit about a teenager's choice to walk with Jesus or follow the crowd.

    Youth at the Cubs Game

Teens from the Santa Maria del Mar Youth Group took in a night at the Daytona Cubs baseball game Sunday - and they got double the fun with a doubleheader. They witnessed the Cubs winning the first game with a no-hitter. The Cubs narrowly lost the second game. Then the night ended with a fireworks show.

    Beach Day

The Youth Group spent about an hour on the beach before the rains poured.  We ran for shelther at the reserve across the street soaking wet.  We watched the animals and played in the rain until Mass.  We spent the rest of the day with St. Anastasia Youth Group and had an incredible mass outdoors with Father Al!  After all that we ate lots of food prepared by our awesome Food Team.  It was a memorable day and despite the weather we all had fun!!!

    Messy Olympic Games Event

One of our teens shares, "With chocolate oozing down our backs, marshmallows stuffed down our shirts, and shaving cream in our hair we attempted to see who could shave a water balloon the fastest. After that we had fun making portraits of two of our youth group members out of candy. We finished this messy night with a battle. There were teens getting bombarded with water balloons from every side, hoses were turned on full blast, and water guns were aimed at the nearest victim."

    Medjugorje Day

A few Santa Maria del Mar teens and Core Team members had the opportunity to attend Medjugorje Day at St. Catherine Parish in Orange Park. It was a beautiful day spent in prayer and remembering how instrumental the Blessed Mother is in leading us closer to her Son, Jesus. Many of our teens went on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje years ago, and the fruist of that trip remain in our Youth Program. Thank you Bleassed Mother!
